Oscillococcinum 18 Count (Health and Beauty) I know there are many doubting Thomases when it comes to homeopathic medicine in the United States. The way I figured it, it can't hurt, so why not try it? Our family uses some homeopathic remedies, we are not fanatical hence we sometimes forget to use them as is the case with Oscillo so I have some side by side comparisions experienced in real life.We first bought Oscillo four seasons ago. I find it works best when taken at the first sign such as when people you know have the flu and have been coughing and breathing around you then I've felt like I'm coming down with something---and took it then. The key is also to keep taking it every 6 hours (max 3 times a day) as instructed on the box --- don't stop after one dose. In some cases the illness totally stopped so I stopped taking it when I felt completely normal again. Other times when Oscillo was started within the first day of symptoms when it's clear it looks like flu (not the common cold) we start using it and it seems to shorten the duration of the sickness and the sickness has seemed more mild.Other times I've completely forgotten we had Oscillo (as was the case last fall when one person in the family got sick) and he didn't use it and he was so sick for six days he barely left the bed.We choose to use Oscillo in combination with other good common sense measures such as bedrest in the daytime, getting enough sleep at night, and drinking lots of fluids. When appropriate we combine with western medicine over the counter medications such as a decongestant to relieve fluid in the ears and sinus congestion to try to prevent a sinus infection or ear infection.I note when we've sought medical care, an office consult with a western medical doctor, for flu we have usually been told to do what I just mentioned in the last paragraph, so the western medical doctor held no magic cures (but we left with a $100 office visit consult fee per person).Only once in the past when the H1N1 was going around in our local area in high numbers were two members of our family prescribed an antiviral medicine and one was denied it; we used the anti-virals plus what I mentioned in this paragraph and were so freaked out about H1N1 we forgot to also use the Oscillo.Oscillo is many tiny pellets in a single dose tube that dissolve in the mouth and taste very sweet, like eating a literal spoonful of sugar. Kids love the taste and mine don't protest.Bottom line for our family is, this is not expensive and worth a try when using in combination with typically prescribed measures for flu treatment. And if in the end someone wants to accuse that homeopathic medicine is just using the placebo effect that is fine with me, if the placebo effect works on my kids or my husband or me, we'll take it. Whatever works that is harmless and inexpensive is welcome in our home.One more note, elderberry syrup has been shown in studies to be an antiviral and to have immune system boosting properties (it's in the category or herbal medicine). Consider this over the counter product found at a health food store: Sambucol Original Liquid Black Elderberry 7.8 fl.oz or Nature's Way Sambucus Syrup, 4-Ounce. Again, what can that hurt except your pocketbook just a little bit? It tastes strong like the elderberry that it is made of, which if you've never had it, the closest comparision in taste is black raspberry. Elderberry syrup is much more pleasant tasting than the over the counter cough syrups that are so commonly used by Americans. |
